Welding Couple Spots On Passenger Wing.

I first re-welded a bracket on the under carrage on our 1990's Ford Garden tractor. Since I had the MIG welder set up I decided to weld up the holes on the front wing, I didn't get all the holes welded, had track practice so I fixed the ones near the head light. I will have to finnish another day.

It was a beautiful day today, so I decided to work on beating out the dent on the passenger front wing. It was creased where the head light and chrome side strip come together. I had first worked on it a month ago, beat the dent outward. That was the easy part, took about 1 hr. Today I spent about 4hrs, getting it straight, I have a small spot I will weld, where the two panels come together. The rim where the headlight bucket sits is pretty straight, it will need a little filler, not much is needed. Another step completed, wasn't looking foreward to replacing the whole wing, glad I could make it look better.

More Work On Getting Stuff Done..

Well I took a short break on the car, ran out of wood for the stove. Don't car about working when it is cold, not my idea of fun. Today was in the 50's and scrounged up some scrap wood for the stove and removed some more old paint and rust with a wire wheel. I was also able to do alittle body work on the front air dam. It looks straight now, just need to do some rust removal with the wire wheel. My father suggested after reading my journal that I update my picture, I guess that is my next thing I should do.

I Am Now Removing Paint!

I spent 4hrs removing paint with a 80 grit sandpaper on my black and decker orbital hand sander, when my hands were tired switched to an electric hand drill with a paint remover disc pad. I did run into some bondo on the passenger side rear quarter panel, I knew it was already there when I bought the car. Removed old bondo, might try alittle more body work to the area. I also removed the boot lock and removed quite abit of paint on the boot lid. I like sanding its kinda a relaxing thing to do, made sure to use dust mask and other protections. I then spent the last hour cleaning up my mess I made after stopping for the day.

Did no one suggest stripping the outer part of the car body with "aviation paint stripper."?
It takes a few hours to get down to bare metal and you won't end up with a scratched up
metal from the 80 grit paper. You tape the gaps between the panels with masking tape to
make sure the stripper doesn't get into the door jambs, etc. unless you intend to strip
everything. I have done my 1977 twice, once in 1986 and against in 2006, after a deer hit
it and I had to change quite a few exterior parts (right front fender, and both door skins.)
Comprehensive insurance didn't even blink at the $3800 estimate.

Thankyou for your comment. I've looked at how others have done it on this web sight,I am aware of the aviation paint stripper, and I have switch to paint stripper vs sanding. I'm stripping everything door jambs and under boot lid too, as the PO had painted them. More than anything I'm having fun. I now have most of the paint off.

I hope you didn't find as much Bondo (filler) on your car as I did. Send me an email at:
xanadu@thegrid.net and I will send you some photos of my 1977 after final painting. Yes, you
will like the end result. You might event be "crazy" enough to make your car that smoothe.

Passenger Side, Crack Of Doom Repaired.

Today I fixed the crack of doom on the passenger side, went well. I also fixed some pinholes near the floor boad. The two newly installed floorboards were sealed with the 3M sealant. Last thing I did was strip some paint off of the passenger side wing, it will need a little body work around the headlight. It was a good satisfying day.

Driver Side, Crack Of Doom Repair.

Last friday finished putting up the last two replacement shop lights, it is now nice and bright! Today I did a repair on the driverside crack of doom, I will be replacing that door since there is a huge dent in near the handle. This was a practice piece of work, the job was straight foreward and went well. I took plenty of time cooling the welds with a air compressor. Ground down the welds it looks good. Preped the passenger side for the same job, fixed a few pin holes near the floor board and then ran out of my welding wire. It was a good day!
