First Major Road Trip
Created on 2008-08-20 08:03:50
So last week I drove the car all the way to Elgin, Ore., and back. This was a round-trip voyage of about 900 miles, and the day before I left my old SU fuel pump gave up the ghost and left me stranded. With a new fuel pump, I took the leap of faith ... and the car never hesitated. It ran a few degrees hotter in the Eastern Oregon desert, especially uphill, but this appeared to be normal and under control.

When I got back, I had my vinyl cut, so the car's transformation from rusty hulk to faux-vintage-racer was complete.

I also got some more parts fabricated for the interior. More on that in a later post.

A Quick Picture Of The "custom" Door Panel 1   So the verticals are bloodwood, the panel behind is made of planed-down old-growth fir flooring (scavenged from a house built in 1924) and the bottom is ash. It looks pretty good ....
Interior Decorating     I'm not much of a metal worker, but I do know my way around a wood shop. So when I took a look at the condition of the interior trim bits -- you know, the vinyl-wrapped fiberboard ...

Waiting For The Windscreen 1   Well ... the good news is, I found the camera. The bad news is, the windshield gasket still ain't here and probably won't be til Friday ... when you ship stuff FedEx, it arrives as...
Road Testing     Well, now that the water pump is in and the radiator back, I had to take the car out on the road a bit. We live on a rural road that goes from nowhere to nowhere, so there's almost...
An Bhfuil Eireannaché? 1   Painting is just about finished! After painting it all cream, I decided the color showed its body flaws a little too well. It needed to be busier, so I'm in the process of making i...
Finish Coat! 1   Couldn't hold off. The BGT spent just 8 hours in primer before I was spraying on the top coat. Three pints of cream-colored paint -- it looks good from far away, I'll have to have ...
Goldmember 1   So this morning I got up early and put a full quart of Martin Senour chromate etching/building primer on the old girl. I have to say, it looks pretty good, even the spots on the fe...
