Rear End Noise

Gil Dupre Gold Member — Posted on The MG Experience
Wednesday May 19, 2010 1:52 PM
Well I finally decided to chase the noise coming from the rear center of my MGA.
Put on lift yesterday. Today I checked to make sure it was full of oil. It was so I proceeded to take steps toward pulling the differential chunk. I removed both wheels and brake drums from the rear.
Then I pulled the left rear axle out. Wish I had the proper pullers for that. Checked the outer bearing and it feels smooth.
Decided to quit for the day.
Wish I had all the special tools needed.
Continued next time.

Since my last entry I have replaced the water pump and while I had the radiator out cleaned the engine and touched up the paint on it.
Also made a custom trailer hitch that is the reciever type hidden under the bumper. I had some help with this from Jim Fergusons experiencr with his.

Ordered MGA water pump on Sunday from LBC recieved it on Wed. It is cast iron and looks good. Made in India.
While I had radiator out decided to clean up front of engine. Painted the pump original maroon and touched up engine. As usual a 2 hour job is taking a week or so.

ALMOST MADE IT

On Friday Oct 30 I had everything loaded in my new tagalong trailer to go down to the Chattanooga Choo Choo for our car show. Fired up the MGA with trailer in tow and started down town. Got about a third of the way and heard a rattling sound. Tried to ignore it but it got the best of me. Checked under the bonnet and found a rattling water pump shaft. Back to the house thot I had a spare. After removing said pump and preparing to put spare in I noticed the spare was about half inch to tall
Oh whell! Loaded the GT and went to show. Had loads of fun as usual.

Today I installed the new stainless clad front brake lines for the MGA MKII and bled the brakes several times. Now I have brakes all around.

Its looking good hope to drive it to Blytheville AR in june. Finished carpeting trunk. That Moss carpet is not to good. Put a piece of velcro on back of carpet and attached to the trunk. Went to separate and pulled carpet thru the backing. Wonder if other carpet is that bad.
