Distributorless Ignition

This view shows the ignition side of the engine. My modification was to adapt four GM coils that originally were fitted to late model General Motors LS-2 V8 engines, as found in the Corvette. This gives me one independent coil for each sparkplug. A Megasquirt ECU controls the spark timing and dwell sequentially for each coil and the timing is computer mapped.

The original Lucas distributor was converted into a cam position sensor to give engine position information to the ECU. It sends out a single signal once every-other revolution. The more precise timing signal comes from a new crankshaft position sensor. A 36-1 toothed wheel has been fitted to the harmonic balancer and a variable reluctance sensor picks up the position by the magnetic field of the wheel teeth.

When I converted the engine to fuel injection I also converted the ignition system to a distributorless electronic system, also controlled by the Megasquirt. This is the ignition curve map I'm curently running with.

In 2009 I converted the fueling to electronic injection, and the ignition to a distributorless system.

As part of the interior restoration of my '78 B, I replaced the dash cover which had developed some cracks on top.

Here's the finished result - the messy details follow.
