Under Hood Electrical

Mark Summers — Posted on The MG Experience
Friday July 2, 2010 5:50 PM
Have finished most of the re-wiring of the under hood electrical. Replaced the stock fuse box with a modern box - blade fuses. Installed a power distribution junction for the power feeds to the new relays installed for headlight. Will put in another relay if I decided to put a heater in the car. . .still undecided. Took off all of the winding cover and cleaned up the old wiring. Won't put winding back on unless I find areas where chaffing might be a problem.

Rear Deck

Finished some of the rear deck interior work today. No rear seat: decided not to put in what will never be used. Flat rear deck in place now. The front two sections pivot for access to the battery box, and the rear deck is hinged for access to the spare. Deck is covered with black carpet. Slide rails are 1 inch strips of oak.

Dash And Gauges

Got the dash stripped and recovered for the GT and the gauges cleaned up and reinstalled. Still some switch-work to do, but I'm feeling like this is a big milestone. Will re-run all the wiring in the next couple of weekends, and then the dash can be re-installed.

Mark,
I don't know whether this will be the same with your dash but after I got the dash out of my '76, cleaned it all up, re-installed guages and rewired it - it was a thing of beauty sitting on my bench. What I hadn't allowed for though was the camber (Curvature) of the dash so that when I re-installed the dash on the car and got all the bolts snugged up - which pulls the sides of the dash down relative to the higher center - the guages were all slightly off vertical. It was a real pain to get that dash in and there is no way that I can get my hand up there to slack the nuts off the backs of the tach and the speedo - the most noticable tilters - and rotate them to true vertical so I put up with it. But if I had known before I did it........ Trevor

Thanks for the heads-up, Trevor. I've done a test fit, and it doesn't seem to be an issue at
this point; however, I'll make pay close attention when it goes in for real.

Here's the cargo shelf I made. . .half inch ply. Won't be putting the "back seat" in the car.

Finally -- Putting It Back Together

Boy, it feels good to be putting parts back ON this thing, instead of being in a constant state of disassembly. Got most of the interior painting done. Just the posts left. Was able to build a nice new cargo shelf for the back of the GT. I'm still deciding whether to carpet it or not. I'm happy with the way the floor and tunnel turned out. Engine bay is next.
