Overdrive Works !
Created on 2008-03-25 14:12:23
March 10, 2008 - I finally gave in and had a local MG shop address my gas tank leak and asked them to look over the tachometer and review the overdrive to provide a list of items I needed to get it operational.
The gas leak was a damaged seal on the sending unit housing.
The tachometer was missing a metal strip necessary to read pulses.
The overdrive switch contacts were dirty and once cleaned up, allowed the solenoid to remain engauged.
It is truly an exhilerating feeling to flip the overdrive switch at 55 mph and feel the engine relax before effortlessly accelerating to 70!
The tech was very knowledgable on MGBs and informed me that the overdrive relay switch came later...that provided the "kickout" from overdrive once the 1st or 2nd gear was selected. The normal configuration was direct wire from dash switch to overdrive solenoid to engage in 3rd or 4th gears.
He recommended I replace the transmission mounts as they have deteriorated due to oil leaking onto them.
So, I have the parts on order with some other cosmetic items.
I'm considering removing my dash soon to have it bead blasted and prepped for crackle painting, but timing is crucial as some club events are approaching.
