Carb Conversion...back To Duel S.U.
Created on 2008-06-09 19:33:16
June 8, 2008 - Prep work included dismantling the weber downdraft and removing the exhaust manifold.

The weber intake manifold has a slimmer flange than the original HS-4 intake manifold and it didn't align when we offered up the intake last time.

It took me a month and a half to locate another exhaust manifold at a decent price. I found one on ebay for $21.

I replaced the manifold gasket and exhaust flange gaskets on the downpipes and freed the exhaust system to provide adequate maneuverability to align the 6 flange studs at the joint of the downpipes and exhaust manifold.

June 9, 2008 - The Weber is off.

Using a hydraulic lift to steady and slowly raise the exhaust system, a fellow MG club member and I managed to line up the studs and get the exhaust manifold in place rather quickly, then it was just the matter of reconnecting the exhaust hangers and tightening up the
bolts before moving on to the intake manifold.

Piece by piece of the HS-4 was installed with correct gaskets, heatshield, gaskets, spacers, gaskets and carbs. We used carb rebuild kits from Victoria British and put gross jets inside.

I'm disappointed in the quality of VB parts as I'm finding more problems with items ordered from them than any other distributor.

The cable stop I ordered broke in half as I was tighting the accelerator wire.
Also, the front jet was 1/2" short and when we went to perform the first step of tuning procedure, we found that the jet would not reach the "bridge" after adjusting the nut all the way.

These were just the beginning of our woes.

While rebuilding the jet to the fuel bowl, the old rubber gasket was not removed and managed to clog the flow of fuel from the bowl to the carburator, so the front two cylinders were starved of fuel.

Once that was remedied, fuel started spurting everywhere...which indicated the bowl was not venting properly.

After taking the bowl apart again, we found a spider's egg sack or something lodged in the vent tube...what frickin' next?!

Well the front carb mixure is set too rich because the jet won't reach the bridge, plus the internal carburator piston is not sliding all the way down after acceleration.

So, I'm kinda stuck until I can free up the movement of the internal piston and replace the short jet tube.
