05.02.12 - RD Fuel Sender Float

Interesting, been wondering why lately my fuel gauge seemed to begin reading low soon after a fill-up. Started to drop to like an 1/8th of a tank and would just sit there for quite a few more miles.

Pulled the sending unit from the tank, sure enough - the float is half full of fuel!

Fortunately, since my recent acquisition of a 73GT, I pulled the sending unit off of that one and swapped it - now the gauge reads little less than 1/2 tank!

Weird too, the sending unit I just took out is only a couple years old... new from Moss. Hmmmm.....

Well, added a new member to the stable today.

This one will get a full strip & paint, then all mechanicals from the 70 BGT will get moved over.

Can hardly wait for the "taking-it-all-apart" fun to start!

What a great day! Good Ole Wayne (29DeSoto) and his trusted companion "Cody The Wonder Dog" came over and we changed the rear leaf springs on the RD - what a wonderful difference in the ride! I guess these leaf springs really do have a life-span of about 100K miles. By the way, we got both springs done in 90 minutes! That very well might be a record! I'm very grateful it went as smoothly as it did.

While in a wrenching-mood, I was also fortunate that Wayne brought me a Heater Blower Motor from a Fiero he had laying around. We modified my heater box (basically cut the front cover for easy access) and mounted the new fan motor - HOLY CRAP! what a difference in the increased air-flow with that larger cage!

All in all, a wonderful day - got a couple of projects done and had a wonderful time visiting with great company (tu).

04.01.12 - RD Door Seals & Batt Cutout

Finally got around to replacing the door seals on the RD -- doors shut quite a bit more snugly now. Hopefully, by eliminating the nearly 1 inch gap from shrinkage will cut down on road noise in the cabin as well as rain water getting in.

Also took the time to replace the battery cut-out switch. It was a HF unit (glad I bought a spare) and just got all wonky last week - thought I had a dead battery but found the switch just wasn't making consistent contact when engaged - I guess $3 bucks every 3-4 years ain't too bad considering I engage/disengage every single time I start/stop this daily driver.

All is well once again

Pretty benign day maintenance wise. Too bad the rain/wind is so harsh otherwise I'd take one of 'em out for a spin -- trees & branches down all over the place - roads just aren't prime for a "fun" drive today.

03.18.12 - RD New Stereo

Well, the Tourer finally got a new stereo today! Been holding off till the new Fiero seats got in.

Managed to find a decent Sony CD player/deck from BestBuy and wired it all up. Also took this opportunity to wire-in a Poly Switch (pPTC) across the terminals of the battery cutoff switch - this enables just enough power to the memory of the deck but still prevents power to the solenoid when cutoff switch is "open" (page 55 of Rick Astley's).

Seat speakers are great! What an upgrade from the cheesy (and tired) old "Clarion" AM/FM cassette deck that had a build date of 1983

It's quite interesting having a pair of speakers right behind your head.

Now we're all set to go on Gary's Run IX. (tu)

03.03.12 - RD Gets Fiero Seats!

Well, today was the day.

I simply could not be happier with the Mr. Mike's kit!

His instructional video was great, supplied ALL the tools and parts necessary to do the job (less duct tape if you need to repair a bolster).

I took my time, kept this mantra: watch-pause-do, watch-pause-do, watch-pause-rewind-watch again-do

I also took this opportunity to replace the headrest speakers. Next item for the car will be a nice stereo/cd deck, but I'm "wired" for it now.

One note: if you have a nice big workbench like Mr. Mike does, it sure beats doing it on the living room floor! I got one helluva back ache! LOL!

I'll let these pics speak for themselves - I'm one happy camper!

@Wayne: Thanks buddy - yep, WAY too late, LOL!

@Rick: Well, next time? I won't try to do both seats AND install in same day. My hands are tore up and ache like the dickens! It was all worth it in the end. Oh yes! I did get the pull-tabs... BIG difference! Thanks again for all of YOUR help on this too! Between you and Mr. Mike, I couldn't go wrong!

@Jim: Thank you kind Sir! Ummmm, I'm no expert but.... I think there was some post(s) awhile back that Fiero seats will not fit in an "A" -- double check me by doing a search though. These seats are just SO much more comfortable!

Can hardly wait (cough-cough) to do it all again for the GT!

@Rod: I had a feeling they would be, but MAN! My expectations have been exceeded... I strongly recommend this conversion for anyone considering it - Mr. Mike is the bomb!
