Parking Brake
Created on 2007-11-24 20:43:26
I have never liked the location of the parking brake lever for three reasons:
1. The interference with the Fiero seats I am installing
2. The cable location in the tunnel limits the driveshaft diameter you can use without interfering to about 2"
3. It is kind of awkward to use (I assume it's better if you have a right hand drive car)
So out it goes, to be replaced with a lever on the center of the tunnel. I removed all the mounting structure and welded over the existing hole just to keep the area "clean".
First I removed the sheetmetal piece that mounts the existing handle. I think my spotweld cutter is going too deep- it actually cut thru the lower piece of metal in some places.
Welded a metal patch in the hole, ground the welds flush, and primed the area.

Wilbur, Have you had any luck coming up with the rear sump oil pan? It's more of a problem then I first thought. Rob

Rob: I've kind of set aside the oil pan issue for now because I'm trying to clean up other items. Here's where I am so far: I do have a Solidworks model of a rear sump machined aluminum pan, but it will be expensive- I have checked with a couple machine shops that do work for me at work. I need to look at a steel alternative design- basically sheet metal with a machined flange that I can weld myself. I also have a rubber bumper front cross member that I can check to see if it gives me a little more clearance. Finally, I did some measuring of the engine as currently installed, and the crank centerline isn't in the center of the vehicle, so I need to reposition it before I start cutting anything. This will push the oil pan farther to the passenger side but give me more clearance for the turbo.
