Fuel Tank Mods Continued
Created on 2008-01-12 18:04:33
I didn't get to work on the car over Christmas, but since I got to spend time with kids home from college, that was OK. Now that everyone is back where they belong, and the world is returning to normal, I can think about getting back to the MG. I am continuing with the fuel tank mods, so I can finish the rear end and trunk sheet metal.
1. I installed a pair of baffles to prevent fuel slosh. The right side was cut out of the old tank, the left side I made from scratch, using the existing right side baffle as a template to start with.
2. I made a sump to place the fuel cannister in. I should have cut a hole and welded a sump in, but instead I tried deforming the bottom (with a hammer and template). The result is functional, but not as pretty as I'd like. I will need to paint the tank when I'm done- this should make it look better.
3. I welded the fuel cannister in.
4. Next I fabricated a shelf to mount the fuel pump to, the mounting ring from the Honda donor tank was welded to this shelf. The shelf is 1.5" below the top of the tank- this places the fuel lines and wires below the trunk floor so I don't have to hack it up, I'll just need an access panel to get at the pump in case of problems.
The one thing I did overlook was the fuel gage sender- I didn't leave enough room on the shelf to mount it. I think I will mount one in the location where the stock filler was located since there is already a hole in the trunk floor. Looking back, I could actually have used the stock gage sender in the side of the tank, but I've already welded that closed (oh well maybe next time)
