Starting Trouble

I had noticed that sometimes that a turn of the ignition results in just a click and nothing else. Then another turn and the engine starts up as usual. I decided to try and figure out what was going on.

From advice on the forum, I cleaned the battery cable terminals at the battery, and the starter solenoid. I also added another ground strap just to be sure that the engine was nicely grounded.

Still the click. I put the battery on the charger and it showed that it was about 75% charged. It charged up and then the engine started.

I decided to go for a drive, when I set off only the speedo was working, none of the other dials worked, I was getting ready to turn around, when the car sputtered, almost stalled and then all the dials sprang to life and it was fine. I drove for 40 minutes on some country roads without incident.

Once I got home I did some more research and now I wonder if the alternator is messed up. The ignition light doesn't come on, at all. Tomorrow I'll check to see if the battery charge is higher when the engine is running. If not, then I think I'll unbolt the alternator and take it in to advance auto parts. Maybe get a new one.

Oh, and I fixed the roof. The cross bar that had come torn is no glued in using hot glue and the roof folds up much more easily.

Wing Mirror...

The passenger wing mirror fell off today! I guess I'll be ordering a new bracket. I ordered a Weber 45 MCHH carb conversion kit for the car and apparently it will ship today.

New Car

I got my MGB on friday. Took it for a few short drives around the neighborhood. It runs great, although it runs too rich right now, black smoke and a smell of unburnt gasoline. The previous owner did a great job restoring the car, but couldn't get the carb tuned. The carb is a stock ZS.

I was searching the forums and found a bolt on weber - MCHH that bolts on to the original manifold. Another member "magohn" had done the same thing and he told me that the swap went fine and the car runs great after it. So I think I'll take the plunge and order the conversion kit.
