MG 2008 Part Three

Day 6-8
I hope to do this again. I've had so much fun at this national convention of MG enthusiasts.
The networking and socials were a blast. Tech sessions very informative. More sight seeing and local drives than one could do in two weeks.
Pictures were collected by the host club and will be available to order soon. This might make an interesting slide show presentation at an upcoming meeting. Claire and I am going to close for now, it's time to load the MG B and head east then south. Our next stop is on the Eastern Shore just across the Maryland state line in Chincoteague, VA.

Day 8
I am writing from a lovely B&B, the garden at the Sea Inn. We're in New Church, Va. on the Eastern Shore near the VA/MD border. We spent five hot hours in the MG today, along with a lot of beach traffic heading to Ocean City and other beaches.
Most of the Tech Sessions took place at the hotel which is several miles from Valley Forge and about 20-25 miles from the site of the sho's on to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel

Day 9-10
We arrived home 7/1/08, almost 1500 miles with no mechanical issues. The car used less than half a quart of oil and averaged 26.5mpg. And yes, it was just about too much fun!w on Sat. The

MG 2008 Part One

(Winston-Salem, NC to Valley Forge, Pa.
)
The older I get the more stuff I need, not
to mention the parts and bits for the
30 year old MGB I’m driving as
well as all the dog stuff. Claire, a 75
lb. female German Sheppard, is
coming along for the ride. I don't
know whether the smiles, waves
and double takes are for the car, the
dog or the bozo behind the wheel.
It was probably a combination of
all the above. We had a great ride
despite two hours of liquid
sunshine. The clouds did obscure
some of the overlooks but the sun
came out near the Peaks of Otter.
From that part of the parkway
distant valleys are alternately
visible to the East then a few
minutes later to the West. It doesn't
get a whole lot better in a LBC.
Tomorrow I plan to check out the
D-Day memorial in Bedford, Va.,
Popular Forest (Jefferson's other
home), and enjoy the rest of the
Blue Ridge Parkway and the
Skyline Drive.
Cheers,
PJ

Day 2 (MG 2008) Road Trip
Monday...June 23rd. After a night
of heavy rain, thunder and
lightening, we awoke to clear skies
and 70 degrees which is open air
driving weather at its best. I did
have to
sop up water from the floorboards
before getting going. Before
heading north on the Blue Ridge
Parkway (BRP), Claire and I spent
an hour at the D-Day Memorial in
Bedford, Va. History enthusiasts
don't want to miss this site. It is
very well done and the location has
incredible views of the mountains.
Next was a quick visit to Poplar
Forest, Thomas Jefferson's
personal retreat near Lynchburg,
Va. By mid day we were cruising
north on the BRP. What a great
road! Just 25 miles of cool
motoring later we arrived at
Rockfish Gap. There it becomes
known as the Skyline Drive (SLD),
admission $15, speed limit drops
from 45 on BRP to 35 on SLD.
Traffic has been extremely light
with gas on the SLD priced at
$4.29, regular. Motorcycles
outnumber autos 2 to 1 and RVs
are seldom seen. While taking a
stretch break at one of the
spectacular overlooks a family
from California stopped to “meet
the dog in the MG". As MG
owners hear frequently, they had
owned a MGBGT and wished they
still had it. The California kids had
a great time throwing sticks
for Claire to fetch. Claire had fun
showing off, even playing soccer
with a rock. We talked cars and
took some photos then it was time
to hit the road again. An hour later
we pulled into Big Meadows
Center just in time to raise the top
prior to a frog drowning
downpour. The storm lasted an
hour then we drove through the
mist of the evaporating rain to our
exit for an overnight in Luray, Va.
The sun would be setting soon as
we wrapped up the second day of
this adventure and the question is:
are we having too much fun?

Day 3 (MG 2008) Road Trip
Another picture perfect morning
greeted us as Claire and I took a
morning walk in Luray, Va. We
checked all the fluid levels and
were pleased to find that the only
fluid we had to add was petrol,
$$$. We tried the "doggles"
[sunglasses made for pets] again,
but Claire doesn't like to wear them
so we were off for a great day of
top down driving on the SLD. The
time just flew by and the next thing
we knew we were in Front Royal,
VA. After a quick stop for lunch,
we were off again using maps we
acquired a few months ago. Our
scenic byways route took us
through Harpers Ferry, WVa. and
on toward Frederick, MD to our
overnight accommodations in
Thurmont, MD. Having a 200+ or
- mileage goal each day is working
out just fine. We have time to stop
when we see something intere

Headed Home From MG 2008

Near the border of Delaware and Maryland, I found this sign that just summed it all up in a single word: Happy. Claire[the German Shepard] and I had taken four days on the Blue Ridge Parkway, The Skyline Drive and other scenic byways to reach Philly from NC. This photo was taken as we headed toward the coast taking the long way home.

Emily's First Drive

While visiting home, from the west coast, Dr. Emily Penney had a memorable expierence driving the MGB. At the first stop sign at the bottom of the hill, there was an ah hah moment of WHERE'S the brake!! She is so level headed and cool in a crisis that she grabbed the hand brake in a nano-second. While the car decelerated from locked up rear brakes she got her feet orientated to the peddles and completed the stop. Good work Dr. Penney!!!
