Wiper Motor

Paul Mansell Silver Member — Posted on The MG Experience

We are having many days of rain here over the winter months so I have not had the chance to take the B for a drive very much, so I thought lets do a few small jobs.
#1 on the list was the wipers that always seem a little sluggish, although I have not had to use them at all yet I wanted them to be working 100%.
So I followed a guide that was on this site and set to. Getting the motor off was very simple, undo the Acorn nut, two bolts on the saddle clamp and it was out.
Over to the bench and took the cover off and dismantled all that could be taken apart.
Well there was not as much grease in there as I thought there would be or that I have seen from other members but still it was the thick axle type and even turning the inner wheel by fingers was difficult.
A good clean up all round including the armature and I was ready to start reassembly.
Using white lithium grease and sparingly the inner wheel was far easier to turn and it all went back together easily.
I also cleaned off the cable that turns the wiper heads greased that with white lithium grease as well and was then ready to install. A quick 180 degree turn on the wiper heads first and the cable was fed back in fully. simple re bolt up and it was ready to test.

Wow definately better running now, just need to be brave and take it out in the rain and really test it.......maybe not.

Brake Pedal Issue

Paul Mansell Silver Member — Posted on The MG Experience
Monday August 15, 2011 6:58 PM
So there we were the wife and I out for a nice drive when I noticed that when applying the brakes every thing seemed OK however if I kept the pressure on the pedal started to go soft and down.

mmmm, here am I thinking do I have a leak etc or did my brake master cylinder suddenly decide to go out.

Checked fluid etc and definately no loss so suspected the Master Cylinder, as I need to get an out of province inspection done soon decided lets just put a new one on.

After a bit of fiddling I got the old one out and the new in, had my wife sit in the car and bled everything thoroughly.

WOW, what a rock hard pedal with hardly any travel, the best I have ever seen even on new cars.

Maybe come the winter I will get a new Clutch master and slave, flexible pipes etc and uppdate that as well.

Interior & Seats Recovered

After waiting for what seemed a long time my new seat covers in Honey Tan finally arrived, I had already put in the new interior kit and new carpet so I was looking forward to completing the seats.

A bit tricky to do and I may not have done the absolute bbest job but I am happy with the outcome, now to get them in the car.

OK so now I need to get the new top on the car, not looking forward to that one.

Wheels Done

Paul Mansell Silver Member — Posted on The MG Experience

The wheels have been off all winter and I finally decided I need to get cracking on cleaning them up and making them look good, so I took them in to get the trires and wheel weights removed and then started to look around for a sandblaster.

Struck lucky and a local company was willing to blast all 5 clean and also spay a heavy duty strong primer on them all for $150. took 3 weeks to get them back but was well worth the cost and time. Picked up some wheel silver spray at my local Canadian tired and spent several days spraying 2-3 light coats over the entire wheels.

Next to the black, using gloss tremclad, tried masking off but that was a real pain so in the end choose to do this by hand with a small and medium brush, tediuous but worked the best.

Also ordered a new set of wheel lugs to finish it off, just need to get the tires put back on and balanced using stick on weights, may even look into "Dyna Beads" seems to be a neat new technology for balancing.

Back Together

So with the painting done now comes the fun part putting everything back together, now as I go I am cleaning and polishing as best as can be expected given the age of the parts. The rear bumber has many pits etc but it cleaned up nicely.
I really like the fact I changed from the old style plastic MG plate on the trunk to the more asthetic style of the chrome MG symbol, I think they look way better.
Working toward getting the side chrome on (new pieces) and the mirrows and top mounts etc. fiddling with the doors as I put them back with new door seals etc.
Looks not bad I think.

Paint Is On

The final coat of paint is now done and I decided this week to pull it out of the garage and rub it all down with 1500 grit wet and dry then using maguires compound I did one full run around the car to start to bring the shine out. Went well and I will do another compound next week and that should be it.

Looking forward to getting the Chrome all back on and the lights and door windows etc, maybe I will even get a chance to drive before the snow flys.

I did get the underside of the hood completed with new insulating material and a snazzy logo.

Next on the list is the grotty Rostyle wheels, time to take them off, get them sand blasted and painted up ready for the spring I think.
