Crank Seal Replaced- Finally
Created on 2007-01-27 18:30:31
Well, last week I finally got the crankshaft pulley bolt off. It took the car in fourth gear, emergency brake on full, front of car on jack stands, rear wheels chocked, a socket, four-foot cheater bar, and two pieces of angle-iron with bolts to go through the holes on the pulley, and it still fought, but it's out.

I then removed the seal, which was in bad shape, scraped off the old gasket, beaded and blasted the cover, primed, painted, and reinstalled - a quick test run showed no leaks!

I had to wait the week in between because one of the thinks I tried was heating up the pulley bolt with a torch, and I ruined the rubber in the harmonic balance.

Whe reinstalling, I oiled the seal, put the gasket on the cover with RTV compound, put the pulley through the seal, and the whole kit onto the shaft. I then put on as many of the timing chaing cover bolts as I could reach (two were behind the pulley), and then removed the pulley and put on the other bolts, and torqued the whole shebang to specs.

This is the first time the car has not leaked here since I got it- I am very excited. Just wish it was warmer out to drive some more.

A follow up a week on - today, while only 20 degrees out and some salt dust on the road, I took the car out for about 30 minutes. Hills, stop lights, highway speeds (75 mph) and back home. Still no leaks! Wahoo!
