Heater Core Removal/Repair
Created on 2006-07-06 13:02:56
After a 65 mile drive home in 90 degree New Jersey summer on the 4th of July weekend, my son Jeremy and I arrived home, and the engine is hot. Pop the hood, and see fluid leaking from the heater core. Some antifreeze on the floormats in the passenger compartment as well. I notice also that the electric fans are not working.
Into the books and start tracing the fan circuit. Turns out that the thermostatic switch is not working, so I make a jumper and let the fans run for a few minutes. I pull the thermostatic switch, notice that the contacts are filthy, so I clean them out and hope for the best.
Time to pull the core. I removed all screws, wiring, and disconnect the vent control cable from the center console, and pull it and the whole mess out. Had to pull the bonnet off, the center console, EGR lines, grrrrrr! A major pain in the rear, with many bloody knuckles.
The heater core looked good, no leaks, just around the hose clamps and into the heater box.
I was having trouble gettin gwarm air in the car, so I also pulled the heater control valve, drilled out the pop rivet, pulled it apart, cleaned it out, and tested- works.
In the meantime, wanting to use the car, I just connected the two heater lines with a length of copper. And since I pulled the heater control valve (and it being the 4th of July by now) I had to run down to Advanced Auto and get a roll of gasket material and make new gaskets. Tested the whole kit 'n kaboodle for a bit, and no leaks. BONUS- fans now work. Let's hear it for clean contacts.
Core is now on the bench, awaiting the replacement gaskets and seals. Big drive this weekend- let's hope for no leaks
