Rear End Done

Mike Nyholm — Posted on The MG Experience

After working on it an hour here and an hour there, got it all back in and gave it a test. No sound coming from this rearend and springs are a little softer, which is what I was looking for. The car sits 1 1/2 inches lower than previously. The only part of the project that took a little patience and persistence was getting the spring shackle on the right side to pull together with the new poly bushes. With the restricted clearance because of the gas tank on that side, a little trial and error was required before I figured things out.

Refurb Rearend

Replacement rearend cleaned up and with new seals in ready to go. We've been chasing our daughter's volleyball team around the state the last few weeks so progress to get things back together have slowed some. Maybe this project will get completed over the Thanksgiving holiday week. Then again, with our boys football team possibly playing in the state tourney...it may be a couple more weeks. Nice thing about the winter, things can progess at their own pace.

Leaf Spring Restoration

I cleaned up the leaf springs out of the 73 to put in the B. They are the ones to the left in the pic, the one on the right is the original out of the 74. The 73 spring has one less leaf and the metal seems a little less beefy. It's hard to tell by the pic but the 74 spring also has a little more of a bow to it. I'm hoping the ride level will be a little lower with the 73 springs in. New Gabriel shocks were bought yesterday for a less harsh ride and the brake drums were dropped off to be turned before they are put back on the rear end.

Headlight Relays

The weather is still too nice to dive into replacing the rear end at the moment so I decided to install the relays that I had bought when I earlier purchased the suspension bushes for this winter's project.

I bought these relays last year but haven't put them in yet. What wires (color) did you connect them to for the power?

Winter Projects Prep

Mike Nyholm — Posted on The MG Experience

This winter the plan is to go through the suspension. When I bought the car I switched out the rear end for the one in the parts car. The one from the parts car has been in for a couple of years and I have noticed it has a slight noise coming from it. So before the weather turned bad I decided to switch the rear ends back the way they were and also get the rear springs out of the parts car while I'm at it. They have one less tension bar in the leaf spring which may allow the rear end to sit a little lower.

Hood Strut Reinstallation

Rather than reweld the hood hinge bracket at this time I decided to relieve some of the pressure on the hinge by switching around the mounting points on the struts.
