Interior Panel Repaint

Mike Nyholm — Posted on The MG Experience

The interior is at the point where the panels can be reinstalled so I freshened them up with SEMs vinyl paint. I had bought new boards for the skins last fall and put them together. PO cut holes for speakers in the previous panels so I'll have to pick up some speakers to put in the holes. Ordered new vinyl covering for the back cockpit surround Monday and new door weather stripping from Macgregors today. I still have to figure out how I'm going to connect the new choke cable to the weber. I'm going to have to come up with some homemade solution because there is no keeper on the carb. The the bolt head on the keeper for the heat adjustment cable snaped off when tightening it down so I'm going to have to decided whether to just leave it as is until the heater valve needs replacing or give it a little preventative attention by trying to replace it now. Last time I looked, I couldn't find any source for those keepers. Maybe I wasn't looking hard enough.

Sorting Out Dash Wiring

Mike Nyholm — Posted on The MG Experience

One of the things that has suffered from the hand of POs on this car is the interior wiring. Particularly the console wiring. So as I put things together, I'm trying to do it in an organized manner. All the wiring to the seatbelt warning system has been cut up. That's fine, I'll just isolate them. The windshield is back on which with the new weather stripping was one of the most difficult parts of the project. That, and trying to re-feed the old, frayed heater control cable into the keeper in the heater box.

Rolled B out into the daylight to get a better look at the new paint to see if there will be any issues to contend with.

Painted first with epoxy primer and then covered with one stage PPG acrylic urethane. The color is flame red even though the inside digital pic makes it look like orange.

Garage To Paint Booth

Just thought I would show a pic of how I set up to paint in our garage. It's not original to me. Everything is removed from the room and protruding surfaces like overhead lights etc. are wiped down with a damp cloth. Floor is mopped. Garage door is lifted high enough for 2 box fans to be placed under it at each corner and a piece of plywood is used to close up the gap between them. Sheet plastic is hung from the ceiling to separate the garage bay I'm painting in from the one next to it. Air comes in through the gap above the garage door and is exhausted out the floor by the fans. Provides a pretty dust free job.

Major Body Work Done

Rolled the car out into the light of day to give it a once over (at least) with the eyes to make sure there were not any lingering surface scratches to contend with. Then wet sanded the body with 320 grit, gave it a wash and dried it. Had friend help me push it into the other garage bay in prep for painting.
