Into The New Year

My first entry for 2012 and looking forward to some excellent days out.
MoT test last Saturday and she passed again with flying colours and no advisory items. Did just over 800 miles last 12 months. Car is running very well although carbs could do with a balance. Have tried without too much success, I need an airflow meter to do it properly. have had a few local trips out when the weather has been reasonable to keep the wheels turning. Lighter evenings on the way from this Sunday with the clock change, roll on British Summer Time!

Fuel prices in the UK are continuing their upward trend, now around £1.40 a litre. Makes for an expensive day out if doing the miles. Looking forward to Eastbourne's Magnificent Motors event again this year with the gang in May.

Magnificent Motors

First show visit of the year and a run down to Eastbourne, Sussex for the Magnificent Motors Event. Saturday 30th April. Travelled down in convoy with 3 other B's and a superb Lotus Elan.
Weather was a bit chilly to start with but warmed up by midday. Managed to get my wife to accompany me. She was well wrapped up with a tartan blanket! Lovely show, around 600 cars on display at Princes Park, just across the road from the sea front. The B performed superbly without a hiccup. The Lotus attracted more attention and was the only Lotus there on the day.

Got chatting to a chap who sold is '75 GT Jubilee and bought a new MGTF. He's had numerous problems with it and now wishes he'd kept the GT! He's selling the TF to finance another B.

Aiming to visit the Enfield Pageant of Motoring at the end of the month. Regards to all.

Job Done

Saturday morning and a crisp frosty start to the day with cloudless sky. Brakes bled Thursday night, in fact decided to replace all the fluid which is advised every two years. Test drive revealed no problems and a normal braking action. Job Done! Thanks to Chris for his assistance. Taking the B out for a little scamper now.

Regards to all

New Master Cylinder Installed

Up at the crack of sparrows last Saturday and a swift removal of the old master cylinder.
Then off to the MGology Shop to see Dave Vale in Farnborough to pick up the new part.
The refit took a bit longer than I'd anticipated but I won't bore you with the details. Let's just say a little brass washer was forgotten and I had to do the job over again!

Time was against me so bleeding the brakes had to wait until this evening. Just going into the garage now with MG chum Chris (MGC owner) and then hopefully a trip down to the pub for a pint and a chin wag and hopefully no smoking brakes.

Smoke Signals

Plans are in place to replace the brake master cyclinder as a matter of urgency now.

Took the car out last night for a quick scamper to a local pub where I met up with fellow MG'er Chris. Brake pedal started normal then went hard after using the brakes a couple of times. Felt the car was being held back. Arrived at the pub to find both front brakes were smoking very nicely with that burnt brake pad smell wafting across the car park. Once things had cooled down, brakes were as good as gold. New BMC will be installed tomorrow!

Brakes & Revs

Rick Easter gbr — Posted on The MG Experience
Tuesday March 8, 2011 3:19 AM
The oil change was undertaken this past weekend without any hiccups.
However, on a test run afterwards, an old braking problem returned.
I've been getting hard pedal at times with some drag on the front wheels, only now and then. Pedal would go softish for a while and then
it would become hard again as if servo (booster) assited. Braking did not show any pull to the left or right. Pedal remains quite hard most of the time now under normal conditions.

Had the wheels off, tested the calipers, they seem fine, replaced the brake hoses as these can break down inside and thought the problem was just 'one of those things'. But, I've now decided to replace the brake master cylinder as a precaution, it's possible it's on the way out.

Also on the test run, the engine revs decided to stay high requiring a blip on the gas pedal to bring things down. Happened now and again when the engine was hot last year. Checked the carbs and notice the back carb linkage was not returning all the way. Rectified it simply and cheaply with a new return spring.

Decided to remove the splash panels for the first time to check condition inside the front wings. All is solid and healthy looking with waxoyl coating. Sigh of relief.

Until next time, regards to all.
