New (to Me) 1974.5 MGB GT

Took official possession of a 1974.5 Rubber Bumper MGB GT on Saturday January 15, 2011. It is Citron in color, has a blue label O/D trans and air conditioning. Everything is there, in pretty decent shape. Very little rust that I've seen except for a small amount at the drivers side front fender bead between the fender and cowl. At present it's not running, but I've not tried to start it yet. got it home Sat., put a cover over it and haven't looked at it further. I hope to give it a really good looking over this weekend, and possibly try and get it started.
As for plans, I've got a Rover 3.9L engine with complete EFI system to install, looking for a T5 trans at the moment. I really want to keep the rubber bumpers due to the scarcity of the car (from what I've heard here)
This will eventually be my daily driver and replace the 1974 Roadster that is currently holding that position.

280zx 5sp Swap

Trey Decell usa — Posted on The MG Experience

Starting the swap of the original 4sp trans to a 5sp acquired from a 1982 Nissan 280zx. I'm going to try and document the process with pictures and journal entries as I go. As of now (9.24.08) I have the trans, the adapter plate, driveshaft and flywheel ring gear. As soon as I get the other needed parts, it's coming apart and the fun begins! While I've got the engine/trans out for the swap, I plan on cleaning up the engine and engine compartment and painting said items. (something I wish I had done when I painted the car, but never got around to.) I will also keep a record of how much it costs, I'm fairly sure it can be done substantially cheaper than the kits available out there. I don't have anything against the kits, just a shortage of MG funding... more later

Had the wire wheels dipped and powdercoated, installed new carpet, new top, new windshield, windshield frame polished, installed Pertronix elec. ignition, have all new poly bushings to put in next. I've been too busy driving it to do any more work.

Next project on the table is to replace the 4sp trans with a 5sp from a 1982 280zx, I purchased the trans from a donor car at the local Pull-a-part yard. It turned out to be in excellent shape, full of goods clean fluid, and shifts smoothly. I've got an adapter plate coming, just gathering info and tips right now from people who have already done the swap. More entries and pictures to follow, I hope to keep this journal updated regularly with my progress

Finally Got Some Color On The Car...

Well, today, March 10th, I finally was able to get the car painted. It looks better than I imagined that it would. I'm pleased with all the work I put into it so far.. It will need some wet sanding and a good buffing to get the little bit of orange peel gone, but never having painted a car before, I think it turned out good. Now to put it all back together with all new rubber/weatherstripping so I can enjoy it.

Primer...Finally!!

OK, so it's mid February and I'm behind my original schedule. The weather has not been cooperating with my weekends. On a positive note, I have decided to paint the car British Racing Green. Yesterday, Feb 11th, I finally shot the first two coats of primer and wet sanded it out... Pretty slick, better than I thought! Hopefully the weekend after next I'll actually have some color on the car, as long as everything goes well...

Beginning The Re-paint Process

Starting with the new year, I drove the b one more time, then proceeded to strip it down to be repainted. I removed everything that could be removed, then stripped all the paint off with a razor blade, down to the primer. I am now in the process of removing dents and sanding prior to shooting primer. I hope to have it painted and start putting it back together by mid Feb. This is what it looks like today. I still haven't figured out what color I'm going with...
