Trip To New York

Vic Auletta — Posted on The MG Experience

Finally got a chance to make a trip with the "B" last weekend, and I must say it was an adventure. The five speed worked out fantastic, cruising at 65 ro 75 mph on the Jersey Turnpike with the rpm's just above 3,000. The weather didn't really cooperate with rain on and off, but it was a beautiful trip regardless. Just thought I'd document the first trip with the Nissan five speed.....

Nissan 300ZX Five Speed

Just a note to say that the transmission turned out so much better than I expected. The car is just wonderful to drive as I can now keep up with traffic, and now I look forward to doing some trips this summer. Ocean City is the place to be with an MG cruising up Coastal Highway. I'm not sure if anyone else reads these entries, but if you haven't driven an MG with an overdrive or a five speed, you just don't know what your missing. The car is totally different. Your cruising at 65 mph and the engine is just turning 2,800 rpms. You can have a nice conversation, and the engine is not tached up and ready to jump out of the car. I will be logging some miles now going to some places I've been wanting to see.

"The Trans Is In"

Well the 300zx trans is in the car. It slid in just as nice as can be. I will be able to change the clutch without pulling the engine, since I put the trans in with the engine in the car. So far everything is working out great. I'm having the slave cylinder hose made and that should be back by Wednesday. I have the driveshaft thing worked out and the shifter turned out better than I thought. If all goes as planned I will be able to make my yearly Christmas Day Run. That would be a nice present. Well, I'm going to look forward to having fifth grear. See ya...........Vic

Five Speed Conversion

I am well into my quest to bring a five speed to my '71 MGB. I have the trans I want to use and am having my machine shop making the modifications needed to make this all come together. I'm not using anyones "kit" to do this as I like to figure things out myself and I'm not one to cut up a car to make it work. One problem I have come across is that the point at which the shifter come through the floor tunnel is about tree inches off towards the rear of the car. I could make a "funky" shifter adapter, but I don't think I'll like the way it would shift. The pivot point would be off and I would loose the feel of shifting gears. I have some options open to me and I will see if I can get the shifter to come up in the correct location. Well I'm off to pick up some parts and get this car back together.....

I think I have figured out my shifter problem and will try it out soon. I am posting a picture of the trans I am using. It's out of a 1985 Nissan 300ZX. Some say it won't work, Oh well. "nothing ventured, nothing gained!"

"When The Rains Came"

Worked all week to get the "B" ready for a nice ride to Rock Hall on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and then down to Ocean City. Both are beautiful places with nice restaurants and great seafood. Changed the oil, adjusted the brakes and valves, and topped off all the other fluid levels. Then towards the end of the week the news came in that we were going to get higher than normal rain. Now for those of you that have MGB's, you know how these little cars can leak. My winshield leaks like a sive. Being caught in the rain is one thing, leaving in the rain is something altogether different. It is now Wednesday and the rain still has not stopped. I'm glad the wife and I held off going. I know there will be other weekends and the "B" will be in the wind headed to my favorite places. Man, I can't wait. Until then, keep on the sunny side of life.
