Graduate student in literary nonfiction program at the University of Oregon Dept. of Journalism and Communications ... older than average (40) -- lots of background in small weekly and daily newspapers. And, with a debilitating addiction to British automobiles that I hope to pass on to my 8-year-old son, Nate, despite the best efforts of my far-more-practical wife, Natalie, who drives a Civic Hybrid! My dad's first car was a Sunbeam-Talbot, and my mom had a Hillman Minx for a while in the mid-70s -- until its single brake cylinder failed while coming up on the Weyerhaeuser logging road in Molalla, Ore. This very nearly resulted in death, and that was the last British car my family infested right up til Pop bought the Jaguar I currently own.

Interior Work Nearing Completion ...

Interior work

Not wanting to spend $350 replacing the missing or rotted vinyl interior trim on the car, and having a bunch of old wood lying around from various projects, I set about making an interior out of bright wood. The door cards are made of old-growth Douglas Fir flooring reclaimed from a 90-year-old home in Olympia; the bottom of the doors and sill plates are made of ash; the uprights are African bloodwood that I happened to have around (I asked my wife to pick me up some, and she came home with the ...

Vinyl Cut And Mounted!

BGT front view

I had Brad Johnson Signs of Corvallis cut me some vinyl. He spent a couple hours on it, with my help and rather more help than we needed from my 8-year-old boy ... anyway, here's what the car looks like now, probably the final incarnation at least until I mount the chrome strips:

First Major Road Trip

Stickered BGT rear quarter view

So last week I drove the car all the way to Elgin, Ore., and back. This was a round-trip voyage of about 900 miles, and the day before I left my old SU fuel pump gave up the ghost and left me stranded. With a new fuel pump, I took the leap of faith ... and the car never hesitated. It ran a few degrees hotter in the Eastern Oregon desert, especially uphill, but this appeared to be normal and under control. When I got back, I had my vinyl cut, so the car's transformation from rusty hulk to faux...
