So why is this car so rare. Is it a one of a kind factory race car?

On a separate note. Right before I bought my MG I almost bough a 64 tempest. It looked like that one.

Had a '64 LeMans convertible with factory 4-speed on the floor. Only car I ever saw that felt blue printed and balanced from the factory. The 326 could actually pull most stock GTOs with 390s. My dream machine.

In the '60's all of the factory skunk works were putting monster cars out to their race teams. Chevy, Pontiac, Olds, even Buick, Ford and Chrysler. They all had factory cars that were engineered and built just to win races. Mostly drag races with the theory that "if you win on Sunday, you'll sell on Monday." It worked then for both the drag race scene and the early days of NASCAR.

This car is so special because it is one of only a handful of factory Pontiac race cars built, and even fewer known to still exist.

Visit a car show in Michigan during the summer months and you can see some amazing factory hot-rods. Many with little or no miles on the odo - trailer queens all, but beautiful cars from the by-gone days of factory backed racing enterprises.

Speaking of that vintage, I remember the day my dad brought home his brand new '62 Pontiac Grand Prix. It was black with a red leather interior, went like a rocket with the 389! Must have been a sad day for him when he traded it for a new Pontiac Bonneville station wagon several years later when my little brother was born and we needed the extra room. sad smiley
